Lewis Hamilton raced a dominant qualification to take pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Silver Arrows are on the front row at the Yas Marina Circuit for a fifth year in succession - a new record for a circuit in Formula 1. Qualifying for the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi was the last chance for Max Verstappen to become the youngest polesitter ever in Formula 1. The Dutchman had to settle for the sixth time in the final phase.

Grosjean defeated Leclerc for the seventh place, while Ocon and Hülkenberg qualified as ninth and tenth behind.

Beyond the battle at the front, which is about little more than honour and a positive feeling going into the winter, the other focus of the weekend is McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who is bowing out of Formula 1 after this race. The two-time champion had as good a qualifying session as could be expected in his difficult car, making it into the second knock-out session and 15th on the grid.
