Fernando Alonso finds himself in a no man’s land as he approaches the final six Grand Prix of the season. His Aston Martin has struggled to compete with the top teams’ cars throughout the year. In Singapore, the Spaniard settled for eighth place, but he acknowledges that more is needed if the team ever hopes to fight for a race victory.

“Eighth is better than we expected when we traveled to Singapore,” Fernando Alonso commented after the Singapore GP. “The qualification was very encouraging; starting at P7 is not so bad. We then dreamed of an eighth or ninth place, and we achieved that.” Under the lights of Marina Bay, he secured four World Championship points for Aston Martin. Alonso himself is in ninth place in the drivers’ championship, a fair distance from Sergio Pérez (8) and Nico Hülkenberg (10).

“It was a good strategy from the team,” explained the veteran from Oviedo. “We were behind Nico Hülkenberg, but managed to overtake him with an undercut. After that, the eighth place seemed to be the highest achievable.” Fernando Alonso, who faces little competition in the championship, hopes to make a step forward in Austin.

Challenges and Future Prospects

“We are losing ground to the top teams – we are stuck in the midfield,” he continued. “We really need to change that. In the last two races, we were able to qualify well and, because they were street circuits, we could reasonably protect our positions. But that does not hide the lack of performance.”
