Andrea Kimi Antonelli made waves once again in Interlagos by securing an impressive second place in the São Paulo Grand Prix, fending off a late attack from Max Verstappen. However, team boss Toto Wolff emphasizes that the 19-year-old Italian’s success is largely due to managing his expectations.
“Wolff said after the race, “He was strong all weekend. Perhaps it was because he was racing on a circuit he didn’t know – that makes it a bit easier. The expectations are lower, the pressure is less than on some European circuits. And then the execution at the end is flawless: holding off Max on newer and softer tires, that was really strong and shows what’s to come.”
Wolff explained that Antonelli is still young and it’s important for him to keep his own expectations in check. “You’re only 19, you’re on circuits where you’ve performed well in the past, and then suddenly you’re at a disadvantage. You have a sensational teammate who is top-notch, and on unfamiliar circuits the pressure is often lower: your own expectations are lower, others’ expectations are also lower, the pressure from fans is less. That plays a big role in his performance.”
Additional Pressure from Italy
Wolff also pointed to the extra pressure Antonelli faces from Italy. “After the races in Montreal and Miami, the Italians were talking about the legend Kimi Antonelli, and that creates extra pressure. So let’s stay grounded. He came in second today and held off Max, which was impressive, but ultimately we want to win races and compete for championships.”
